#Twitterocity
:
understanding
the
relationship
between
Twitter
, the
President
and the
public
Author(s)
Konold
,
Emma
Abstract
On the
surface
,
Twitter
seems
like
flawless
tool
for
President
Obama
and his
team
to
utilize
as they
perpetuate
and
defend
his
political
agenda
items
such
as
climate
control
, the
Affordable
Care
Act
, and
raising
the
minimum
wage
.
Presidencies
prior
to the
Obama
administration
had to
rely
more
heavily
on the
media
to
get
their
messages
to the
public
. But the
onset
of
social
media
,
especially
Twitter
, has
given
President
Obama
a
unique
advantage
over
past
presidents
.
Twitter’s
social
network
allows
President
Obama
to
constantly
be on the
world
stage
,
without
the
pressure
of the
press
. The
ability
to
manipulate
and
carefully
craft
messages
for the
public
, and
send
them
out
to
50
million
followers
within
seconds
has
given
President
Obama
more
communicative
authority
than any
other
president
in
history
.
Twitter
enables
his
administration
to
send
constant
,
unmediated
rhetoric
as
allowed
by the
tradition
of the
bully
pulpit
. In
fact
, the
utilization
of
social
media
seems
to
perpetuate
the
power
of the
bully
pulpit
,
giving
President
Obama
greater
authority
and
presence
within
the
eyes
of the
public
than any
other
president
.
